Angry Macarthur residents say PM Tony Abbott should have faced the music during Campbelltown visit
SEAN THOMPSON
MACARTHUR CHRONICLE CAMPBELLTOWN
MAY 26, 2014
Tony Abbott looks on with Russell Matheson as they look at CCTV footage at Campbelltown police station.
MACARTHUR region residents have criticised Prime Minister Tony Abbott for avoiding the community during his visit to Campbelltown police station on Friday.
Readers are still seething over what they perceive was a harsh Federal Budget, with posts about Mr Abbott’s visit garnering more than 200 angry comments and more than 16,000 views on the Macarthur Chronicle Facebook page.
Many of the comments centred on the government’s $7 co-payment for GP visits.
Kim Norton posted: “Would you like to head up to see the aged pensioners who you screwed over big time or would you like me and a few others to bring them to you?”
Paul Smith posted: “Is that the only place you feel safe at a police station?”
During the press conference at the police station to announce funding for CCTV cameras, Mr Abbott said he knew he’d have a hard time convincing Australians about the Budget.
“I always knew ... that this was going to be a big ask of the Australian people because for too long, under Labor, there had been this assumption that you could just keep spending money, money that you didn’t have,” he said.
In response to questions about the GP co-payment, Mr Abbott said “I am not for a second denying that this is an additional cost and I absolutely accept that hard-pressed families will find this burdensome.”
Werriwa federal Labor MP Laurie Ferguson said the Budget would hurt families in a big way.
“One of the things I hope he (Abbott) learnt during his trip is that we (Macarthur region) have the seventh-highest use of bulk-billing in the country,” he said.
